Barber Life EDU · Marketing
The Google Business Profile playbook for barbers. Claim it, fill it out the right way, earn honest reviews, and track what turns into booked chairs.
Start here · Google’s own links, nothing else
One you control. Booth renters: your own, not the shop’s. Owners: add barbers as managers, never share passwords.
Shop name and city. Listed already? “Claim this business,” then “Manage now.” No duplicates.
No listing? Create one at business.google.com/add. Pick Barber shop as your primary category.
Renting a booth or suite? Read who gets a profile first. An address needs a permanent sign with your name.
Google reviews within 5 business days after you finish (a postcard can take up to 14 days to arrive). Don’t edit your name, address or category until you’re verified.
Then score yourself on the 100% profile.

How the map pack decides
Google names three factors for local results. Tap each dial. You control one a lot, one some, and one barely at all.
There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.

Your moves
Claim and verify
Four steps to own your listing, then the rule for who gets a profile at all. Booth renters, this part is for you.
Search your shop on Google Maps and choose “Claim this business.” Not there? Add it at business.google.com/add. It’s free.
Clients come to you: storefront, address showing, a permanent sign with your name. You go to them: service area, address hidden.
Phone or text, email, recorded video, live video call, postcard, or instant for some. Google picks which ones you get.
Review takes up to 5 business days. Don’t change your name, address or category while you wait. Google will never ask you for your code.

Who gets a profile?Pick how you work

The 100% profile
Tick what your profile has right now. The ring scores it and shows what to fix first. Google’s own data: complete profiles get 7x more clicks.
Let’s build it.
Fix next
Example weights. Google publishes no completeness score; these lean toward what Google ties to ranking and clicks.

Name, category and guideline traps
Each card is a move barbers try. Flip it for what Google allows. Break the guidelines and Google can suspend you.

Outside
Every way clients walk or drive up, day and night. It’s how they find your door.
Inside
The chairs, the stations, the feel of the room. Clean, bright, swept.
The team
Relaxed shots of the barbers. People book people, so show who’s cutting.
The work
You at the chair and the finished cuts. Name the style when you post it.
What’s new at the chair
A fresh cut, a new service, new hours. Add a photo and a Book button.
A real deal, with dates
A weekday student price or a back-to-school special. Needs a title and dates, and gets a View offer button.
Something to show up for
A back-to-school cut day or a charity cut-a-thon. Needs a title, a start and an end.
Tests are mixed, and none shows a reliable overall gain. One 2025 test saw a “near me” lift in the tagged towns and drops elsewhere. Spend the time on real, recent photos instead.
Posts aren’t on Google’s list of ranking tips. They help people who already found you decide. Weekly is the target.
Google wants photos that look like real life, with no heavy filters or AI. Sharp, bright and honest sells.
Google’s own data ties photos to more direction requests and more website clicks.

The review engine
Ask at the mirror check, then hand them the QR card or text the link so they can review later. Ask everyone, not just the ones you think loved it, and never push for it in the chair.
“If you get a minute later, I’d appreciate an honest Google review. Here’s a card with the code, or I can text you the link.”
The reviewer gets a notification. Keep it short, sign your name, skip the promo, and take problems offline.
No cash, discounts or free cuts for reviews. Not even $5 off. No reviews from staff or family. Getting caught can block new reviews and put a warning on your profile.

Make it sound like you. Never mention a client’s private details, and never offer anything to change a review.
Get it: Business Profile → Read reviews → Get more reviews. Copy the link. Make the QR code from a computer (it isn’t offered on mobile) and print it for your station and receipts.
“Thanks for coming in today, [Name]. If you’ve got a minute, an honest Google review helps people find me: [link]. [Your name]”

Track it
Performance shows what people did after they found you. Tap a tile for what it counts.
Source: GBP Help, “Understand your Business Profile performance.” Find it at business.google.com → Performance, or in the Maps app under Business. Checked Oct 2026.
Enter last month’s numbers from Performance (examples shown). Actions include clients who already know you, and calls are just button taps, so keep the new-client share low.
One person can tap more than one button. First visits are counted once; regulars add their return visits on top.
You rent a booth in a shop with five other barbers. What should your profile be called?
A client offers a 5-star review if you knock $5 off. Under Google’s rules, that’s…
Which of these will NOT help your unpaid ranking in the map pack?
That’s the quiz. Rules first, then reps: the routine on the next slide keeps it all running.
